If you've been around the blog for a while you probably know how passionate I am about hunger and teaching my children about giving to those in need when ever we can. We have participated in local food drives (at school and with the Stamp Out Hunger drives) and recently we even held our own food drive. I was honored when Feeding America contacted me wanting me to be a Feeding America Hunger Relief Advocate. Through our food drive I learned that in my area of Virginia alone there are about 60,000 children struggling with hunger. That saddened me very much.
I recently discovered a national brand that was doing their part to help get people educated about hunger here at home in the United States. Tyson Foods, in effort to help raise awareness of hunger in the US, started the Tyson KNOW Hunger campaign in early 2011. With the campaign launch, Tyson Foods committed to donate 1 million pounds of boneless, skinless chick breasts to 37 food banks across America during the month of March. Each food bank will receive a full truck load, or about 29,000 pounds, of boneless chicken, enough to serve 116,000 meals per community.
Tyson Foods recently came out with a new breakfast food that is a quick and easy meal that you can heat up for you and the kids. Have you found the Tyson Breakfast Bread Bowls in your local Sam's Club? The Tyson Breakfast Bread Bowls are available in sausage and bacon If you haven't looked you should and give them a try. We found only the sausage kind at our Sam's Club. I'm hoping they will have some of the bacon ones soon. My youngest boy really liked the breakfast bowls. The oldest one said they were ok and he ate them but he's not a big sausage eater, he prefers bacon.
My family and I went to a local Sam's Club and purchased some boxes of the Tyson breakfast bread bowls and donated them along with some other goods to a local food bank. I have a personal connection to this particular food bank so I was glad to get my boys involved in making donations at the God's Storehouse. One of the head volunteers was my uncles boy scout leader and he knows my grandparents really well.
Along with my arm load of Tyson Breakfast Bread Bowls we ended up donating a total of 47 pounds of food. As we were dropping off our donation I saw a line of cars come in the parking lot and go inside the building to pick up their food boxes. I saw all different types of people going inside. Hunger really has no prejudice. Our donation was immediately sorted and boxed up to go right out with someone in need.
I hope that if you have the means or time that you can help make a difference in your community when it comes to hunger. You could make food or money donations, volunteer your time at a food bank or meal serving site. What are other ways you can help educate about hunger in the US in your community? If you would like to follow along with the Tyson KNOW Hunger campaign you can find them on twitter @TysonFoods and the Tyson Facebook page. You can also visit my Tyson KNOW Hunger google+ album to follow our trip through photos from Sam's Club directly to the food bank. If you would like to help I have a quick, easy way that you could help me if you have a Facebook and/or twitter account. If you could, would you share this blog post on your Facebook and twitter pages? You can use the Facebook share button below and the twitter RT button to share. I would love to get this post out there as much as I can to help spread the knowledge and raise awareness of hunger and how real it is in our own communities.
