I've shared a recipe for "zombie guts" before with y'all. That one is red velvet cinnamon rolls made from scratch and require a little more work and bake time 😉 the "zombie guts" recipe I'm sharing today is a short cut version using store bought cans of cinnamon rolls and an air fryer.
Zombie Guts Cinnamon Rolls FAQ
Can you make the cinnamon rolls from scratch? Absolutely, this recipe is a fun, time saver for my daughter to help make. You can also make the cinnamon rolls and icing from scratch if you have more time.
What air fryer do you use? This recipe was made with Chefman TurboFry Touch 8 quart air fryer. The recipe should work in any other brand air fryer just the same. If you want to bake these in the oven, you'll unroll them and arrange them in a baking dish same as the air fryer instructions and bake them according to the cinnamon roll can instructions.
Ingredients
- 1 can of store bought cinnamon rolls (we use Pillsbury and Pillsbury Grands)
- the can of icing that comes in the cinnamon rolls can
- red gel food coloring
Directions
- Remove the rolls from the can. Set aside can of icing.
- If buns are rolled, unravel each bun and stretch it out into a strip. If stamped, use a paring knife to cut through the bun along the stamp to “unravel” the bun. Stretch out into a strip. Note: some canned cinnamon rolls have stamped rolls and others have rolled buns. Either is fine.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with non stick spray and coil each strip to resemble an intestinal path pinching together the ends. The cinnamon roll will expand so the space between the coils is ok.
- Cook in the air fryer at 300°f for 10 minutes.
- While the "guts" are cooking, mix the red food dye into the icing, until a deep rich red color forms. Depending on the type of dye you will use more or less.
- You can also microwave the icing for 10-15 seconds to thin it out some, this will make the simulated blood look better.
- Remove the cooked cinnamon roll gently. If you have a basket with a removable tray, remove the tray and slide the roll-off, if not, you can divide the roll into sections and piece it back together on a plate for presentation.
- Drizzle the red icing over the "guts" however you choose to give it the bloody look and enjoy!
