The movie Hocus Pocus, you either love it or you hate it. I LOVE it. Today for #HalloweenTreatsWeek I'm sharing Hocus Pocus Spell Book Cupcakes with y'all. I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies but as always opinions are 100% mine.
I was an 80's baby and a 90's kid. I grew up watching Halloween movies like Hocus Pocus. I'm not one for blood and gore movies. I always though Thackery Binx was cuter than Max Dennison. As a teen I wanted to be Sarah. In my twenties I felt more like Winifred. Now in my thirties, I realize I am more like Mary. Who is your favorite Hocus Pocus character?
Ingredients & Tools
To save yourselves from having to make a batch of brownies and cupcakes you can buy the large Pillsbury chocolate chunk brownie package from Sam's Club. With the rectangle cookie cutter you will get 22 "books" out of it. For the spell book you'll also need:
1 tube of black cake frosting
1 disposable piping bag fitting with #4 tip
1 package of Wilton small eyeball icing transfers
1 large cookie sheet fitted with parchment paper
For the Hocus Pocus Spell book cupcakes you will need:
1 - Chocolate Fudge Cake mix
1 ¼ C milk
3 large eggs
½ C unsalted sweet cream butter, softened
To make the icing you'll need:
1 ½ C unsalted sweet cream butter, softened
4 ½ powdered sugar
2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
Neon Green gel food coloring
Purple gel food coloring
1 large piping bag fitted with open star tip (Wilton 4B)
1 medium piping bag fitted with star tip
1 package of green Wilton Sprinkle Pouch
How to make Hocus Pocus Spell Book Cupcakes
Book brownies: Using the cookie cutter, cut out 22 rectangle brownies and place onto the cookie sheet. Fill the piping bag with the cake icing. Using the piping bag, pipe a small dollop of icing on the back of the edible eyes. Place the eye onto the brownie. Using the piping bag again, pipe a squiggly line on the side opposite of the eye to create the ‘Spine’ of the book. Pipe a line and then squiggly line over the straight line next to the spine. Pipe half circle on the corners of the ‘Book’. Pipe two dollops on the book. Repeat steps with other brownie rectangles then set aside while you make your cupcakes.
Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pan with liners. Using a large bowl and hand mixer or your KitchenAid mixer, beat all ingredients until combined. Scoop into the cupcake liners, filling about ¾ way full. Bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes. Remove and allow to cool completely.
Icing: Using a standing mixer, or large bowl and hand mixer, beat the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy whipping cream until combined and smooth and stiff peaks form. Spoon about 1 ½ cups of the icing into another bowl and mix in a few drops of the purple food coloring. Add a few drops of neon green into the main bowl of icing until you get your shade of green desired. Scoop 1 ½ cups of the green icing into one side of the medium piping bag. Scoop the purple frosting into the other side of the same medium piping bag. Scoop the remaining green frosting into the large piping bag.
Decorating: Using the large piping bag, pipe a ring of icing around the top of the cupcakes. Sprinkle some of the green sprinkles on top. Using the medium piping bag with the two icing colors, pipe a medium size dollop in the middle of the frosting and carefully place the ‘spell book’ brownie on top of the swirled icing.
